Free Seismic Short Course Offered to Geology Students

Two former GCSSEPM Presidents, Carl Fiduk and Bruce Hart (currently a GCSSEPM Trustee), offered a 2-day "Introduction to Seismic Interpretation" course for approximately 30 undergraduate and graduate geology and geophysics students at the University of Houston. The course, run on February 19 and 20, was a reprise of their January 2015 offering at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. U of H undergraduate students Kavindu Jayanetti and David Lankford, both officers with the GeoSociety at the University of Houston, provided the logistical support that enabled the smooth running of the course.

Through lectures, hands-on exercises, and loads of great discussion, the students gained practical experience and insights that will help them better understand and address a host of seismic interpretation challenges. Lectures focused on principles of the seismic method, acquisition and processing, data display and an interpretation workflow. Exercises gave participants the chance to: a) box in correlations, in a highly faulted area, using a grid of intersecting seismic lines, b) pick top and base of salt to help with a seismic imaging problem, and c) to identify seismic sequences in the Brookian succession of Alaska. Although the employment outlook is not bright for upcoming graduates, the students showed enthusiasm and earnestness throughout the two days.

It is hoped that other free-for-students courses will be offered through the GCSSEPM. Please contact Bruce, Carl or any other member of the Executive Council or Foundation if you have ideas for future course offerings.
