Brian Lock, GCSSEPM Honorary Member
Dr. Brian Lock grew up in the south of England and was educated at Cambridge University (B.A. 1966, M.A. 1970, Ph.D. 1969). In January, 1970, Lock took up a faculty position at Rhodes University in South Africa. In 1977, he was appointed to the University of Southwestern Louisiana. The academic year 1985-86 was spent on unpaid leave with Ram Saxena's Geoconsultants International in New Orleans. He involved the UL students in the AAPG's Imperial Barrel Award (IBA) competition when it was first opened in 2008. Over the following years, the UL team has been successful in the IBA, winning the Gulf Coast Section competition in 2008, 2010 and 2012. The UL team won the international competition in 2012.
Lock has taught industry short courses in the United States, Mexico, Nigeria, Indonesia, Burma/Myanmar, India and Dahrein. Lock has been active in professional organizations, such as the Lafayette Geological Society (President, 1994-5), the Gulf Coast Section of the SEPM (GCSSEPM) (Vice President, 1992) and the Gulf Coast Association of Geological Societies (GCAGS) (President, 1998-9). He has served the GCAGS and its Board of Directors in various capacities for over twenty-five years as a committee chair, editor of the GCAGS/GCSSEPM Transactions, and General Chairman for the 1990 convention. He has also served as Program Chairman for an Annual Convention of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (1994).
Lock has been honored by the GCAGS (Outstanding Educator Award, 1991; Distinguished Service Award, 2005, dedication of volume 56 of the GCAGS Transactions, 2006) and by the AAPG (Grover E. Murray Memorial Distinguished Educator, 2006, and Distinguished Service Award, 2013).
